Which ideal weight formula is most accurate?
None is clearly best. All four were fitted to different data for drug dosing, not to define a healthy weight, and they drift apart away from average height: about 17 lb apart for a 5'0" woman and 33 lb for a 6'6" man. Devine is the one doctors use most. The BMI range is broader and is what the CDC uses to screen adults; muscle, frame and age all move the right number for you.
How we calculated it
- Ideal body weight formulas: each starts from a base weight at 5 ft and adds a fixed amount per inch above it. We use the coefficients published by Pai & Paloucek (2000), the same ones our ideal weight calculator uses. For women, Devine is 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 ft; for men, 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch.
- Healthy BMI range: the weights that give a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 at that height, the CDC's healthy range for adults. BMI does not depend on sex, so the range is the same for women and men of the same height.
- Heights: the formulas were built for adults 5 ft and taller, so the tables start at 5'0". Results are for adults; children and teens use BMI-for-age charts instead.
- Limits: none of these numbers accounts for muscle, frame size, age or pregnancy. They are a starting point to discuss with a doctor, not a target.
